Introduction: Role of a Government

Singapore is a parliamentary democracy. We elect a government that, we believe, will best serve our interest.

Hence, people place great varying expectations on the government to fulfil its roles effectively and efficiently. Putting it simply, we all expect our government to ensure 4 areas are taken care of:

· Ensure citizens safety e.g., from crime and threats of war.

· Ensure justice is served for all

· Provide public goods and services

· Ensure citizen interest are protected e.g., at workplaces

These 4 expectations are broad and the details of each of these roles need to be unpacked to have a better understanding of the role of government and to understand the complexities in fulfilling these roles.
